Iowa Pheasants Looking Low Again

Last year Iowa hunters were estimated to have shot 271,126 pheasants – which sounds like a big number until you realize that it’s the lowest annual harvest number on record, and is 100,000 fewer than were shot in 2008. And this season isn’t expected to be much better (which, if you’re Serious, is no reason not to hunt!).
Here are some excerpts from an article in Iowa’s Telegraph Herald:
> The current nesting outlook is similar to 2009. Iowa pheasants have battled four consecutive winters with more than 30 inches of snow followed by four consecutive springs of cool, wet weather.
> “…there were some bright spots and good hunting available in certain areas of the state [in 2009]. I would expect that we will see something similar for the upcoming year,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist with the Iowa DNR.
