Greenies Going After All Lead Ammo
Hopefully you have been reading about the greenies (environmental groups) walking into the White House with an agenda and walking out with policies that are geared to hinder or stop hunting and fishing. The latest front to open up in this war – it is a war – is lead ammunition.
All lead ammunition, everywhere – and not just that: All fishing tackle with lead in it too.
Our first thought: Can you say, “ka-ching?”
Our second thought: What a bunch of dumba**es.
(Serenity now, serenity now….)
Jim Shepherd of The Outdoor Wire did a great piece today that sums up the arguments of the greenies and of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Excerpts below:
> Five groups, led by the Center for Biological Diversity (based in AZ), filed a petition with the U.S. EPA seeking to ban the use of lead ammunition NATIONWIDE. FOR EVERYTHING.
> The other groups are: the American Bird Conservancy (based in DC), the Association of Avian Veterinarians (FL), Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (DC), and a California hunters “group” (might just be one guy) called Project Gutpile. Gutpile was started by hunter Anthony Prieto to save condors, which are only in CA!
> The greenies claim that “10-20 million birds and other animals die each year from lead poisoning in the U.S.” Such studies are often two parts (out of three) BS, but Jim writes: “Despite the seemingly impeachable ‘evidence’ offered [by the greenies], it would be unwise to consider the petition as lacking merit.”
> Although the EPA has no jurisdiction over ammunition – because ammunition is subject to a federal excise tax and thus is exempt from the Toxic Substances Control Act – the groups are asking the EPA to put ammo under the Act.
> The NSSF noted a very important fact: The 11% federal excise tax manufacturers pay on ammo is a primary source of funding of wildlife conservation. In fact, the NSSF asserts, that funding is the “financial backbone of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.”
> NSSF senior VP Lawrence Keane noted: “Needlessly restricting or banning traditional ammunition absent sound science will hurt wildlife conservation efforts as fewer hunters take to the field. Hunters and their ammunition have done more for wildlife than the CBD ever will.” Absolutely true of all hunters and fishermen vs. enviro groups.
> He added: “The CBD’s scientifically baseless petition and endless lawsuits against state and federal wildlife managers certainly do not serve the wildlife that the organization claims to protect.”
Notable
> The EPA has 90 days to respond. Theoretically, it could decide to ban all lead in ammo and fishing products at that time.
> No word from the ammo companies yet.
> It is well-known that greenies and animal rights groups are doing what they’re doing to effect social change – as in changes to society. This isn’t just about lead!
> You want to help birds, greenies? Cut trees!
